While ongoing research is needed to fully understand the effects of electromagnetic radiation on human health, several growing concerns have emerged. Studies suggest that prolonged EMF exposure may be linked to a range of health issues, particularly in the following areas:
Research indicates that long-term exposure to low-frequency EMFs may contribute to symptoms such as anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and memory issues. EMFs may interfere with natural brain function by disrupting the body’s electromagnetic balance.
Prolonged EMF exposure has been found to affect reproductive health. For women, EMFs can disrupt normal hormone function. For men, the effects are particularly concerning when it comes to sperm quality.
The relationship between EMFs from mobile phones and laptops and male fertility has garnered significant attention in recent years. Studies have demonstrated that EMF exposure may negatively impact sperm quality, particularly motility, morphology, and overall count.
Research shows that exposure to EMFs, especially from mobile phones, can reduce sperm motility and viability. Studies by Kibona et al. (2013) and Deepinder et al. (2006) found significant reductions in these parameters.
EMFs may cause oxidative stress, leading to damage in sperm cells. Mechanisms such as calcium depletion and damage to the plasma membrane can impair sperm production and function, as highlighted by Bhat (2012) and Altun et al. (2018).
For men who frequently carry their phones in their pockets or use laptops directly on their laps, these habits may put their reproductive health at risk. Simple actions like using hands-free devices, keeping phones away from the body, and placing laptops on desks rather than laps can help reduce exposure.
In addition to fertility concerns, EMFs have been linked to oxidative stress, which can damage cells and DNA. This may contribute to accelerated ageing, inflammation, and various chronic health issues over time.
While research continues, many experts suggest adopting precautionary measures to limit EMF exposure. Here are a few ways to minimise potential risks:
