• Can Alpha-Lipoic Acid Help Improve IVF Outcomes? | with Angela Hywood

When women are preparing for IVF, most of the focus understandably goes to medications, scans, and procedures. Those things matter enormously.

But there is another piece of the puzzle that often gets less attention.

    The health of your eggs.

And one of the most effective ways we can support egg quality is by improving the body's internal environment in the months leading up to treatment. That means looking at metabolism, inflammation, energy production, and blood sugar balance, not just hormones.

This is where a nutrient called alpha-lipoic acid, or ALA, has attracted growing research interest.

    So, What Is Alpha-Lipoic Acid?

Think of alpha-lipoic acid as a helper for your cells.

It supports the tiny energy factories inside your cells (called mitochondria), helps regulate blood sugar, reduces inflammation, and protects eggs from damage caused by oxidative stress.

In practical terms, it helps the body:

    • Produce energy more efficiently
    • Improve insulin sensitivity
    • Reduce inflammation
    • Protect developing eggs
    • Support a healthier ovarian environment

This is particularly relevant for women with:

    • PCOS
    • Insulin resistance
    • Irregular cycles
    • IVF preparation
    • Previous poor egg or embryo quality
    • Unexplained fertility challenges

A Study That Really Made Us Pay Attention

One study looked at women with PCOS who had already gone through IVF but had not achieved pregnancy.

These women were already taking myo-inositol, which is commonly used to support ovulation and insulin balance.

    The researchers then added:

    • Alpha-lipoic acid, 800 mg daily
    • Continued myo-inositol, 2 g daily

They used this combination for three months before the next IVF cycle.

    And that timing is important.

Because eggs take about three months to develop, what you do during that time can directly influence egg quality.

    What Happened?

The results were encouraging and practical from a clinical perspective.

    1. METABOLIC HEALTH IMPROVED

    Women taking the combination showed:

    • Better insulin control
    • Improved blood sugar response
    • Reduced ovarian size
    • Small but meaningful changes in body composition

Now, that might sound technical, but here is the key point:

When metabolism improves, ovulation and egg quality often improve too.

    2. EGG QUALITY IMPROVED

This was one of the most exciting findings.

Compared to previous IVF cycles, women taking alpha-lipoic acid had:

    • Fewer immature eggs
    • More mature eggs ready for fertilisation
    • Better overall egg development

    And this matters enormously.

Because in IVF, egg maturity is one of the strongest predictors of success.

    3. EMBRYO QUALITY IMPROVED

The study also showed that embryo quality improved.

    Women taking the combination produced:

    • More high-quality embryos
    • Fewer lower-grade embryos

    Most likely because of:

    • Reduced oxidative stress
    • Better energy production in the egg
    • Improved insulin regulation

    4. PREGNANCY RATES MOVED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

The study was small, so we need to be careful about over-interpreting the numbers.

But the trend was encouraging. Pregnancy rates increased from:

    33% with myo-inositol alone to 52% with myo-inositol plus alpha-lipoic acid

That does not mean ALA guarantees pregnancy.

But it does suggest we are moving biology in the right direction.

Why This Matters So Much Before IVF

One of the biggest misconceptions about IVF is that success depends only on the procedure.

In reality, success often depends on the quality of the eggs we start with.

    Healthy eggs require:

    • Stable blood sugar
    • Good cellular energy
    • Low inflammation
    • Balanced hormones
    • Adequate nutrients

Alpha-lipoic acid supports all of those systems at once.

The Three-Month Rule I Talk About So Often

You will often hear me say this in clinic.

    Give yourself three months.

That is how long it takes for an egg to develop from its earliest stage to ovulation.

So the steps you take today, including nutrition, sleep, stress management, and targeted supplements, can directly influence the quality of the eggs used in your next IVF cycle.

    This is why preparation matters.

    And why rushing rarely helps.

    Is Alpha-Lipoic Acid Safe?

    In most cases, yes.

When used appropriately and at sensible doses, alpha-lipoic acid is considered safe and well tolerated.

But like any supplement, it is not something to take randomly or in very high doses without guidance.

We always individualise treatment based on:

    • Your circumstances and test results
    • Your IVF timeline
    • Your medications
    • Your metabolic health
    • Your overall fertility picture

Because in fertility care, individualisation and precision matter.

    Who Might Benefit Most?

Alpha-lipoic acid may be particularly helpful for women who have:

    • PCOS
    • Insulin resistance
    • Irregular ovulation
    • Poor egg quality
    • Repeated IVF cycles
    • Unexplained infertility
    • Inflammation or metabolic imbalance

It is not a supplement that works for every woman. But it can be a very useful tool when used at the right time and for the right reason.

    The Bigger Message

Fertility extends beyond the ovaries. It involves the whole body. Your metabolism, your sleep, your stress levels, your nutrition, and your inflammation levels all influence the quality of your eggs. And sometimes, small changes made early can make a significant difference later.

    The Take-Home Message

Supporting your body in the months before conception or IVF is one of the most powerful things you can do.

Alpha-lipoic acid is one tool that may help improve:

    • Egg quality
    • Embryo development
    • Metabolic health
    • IVF outcomes

But the real goal is not just to get pregnant.

It is to create the healthiest possible start for your baby and for your growing family.

    With love
