If you’ve ever sipped a matcha latte and wondered, “What’s the hype?” you’re not alone. This vibrant green elixir is everywhere, from wellness cafés to your best friend’s Instagram, and for good reason. Unlike standard green tea, matcha is made from whole ground tea leaves, which means you drink every bit of its goodness.

Ceremonial vs Everyday Matcha - What’s the Difference?

Not all matcha is created equal. If you want the real deal - smooth, vibrant, and packed with benefits - ceremonial grade is the way to go.

One of the best choices is organic ceremonial-quality matcha, sourced from Japan and stone-ground from shade-grown tea leaves. This ensures the highest chlorophyll and antioxidant content. Choose ceremonial grade if you want a pure, clean, naturally energising experience without the bitterness or grainy texture of lower-grade versions.

If you’re making a matcha latte, a high-quality ceremonial matcha makes all the difference. Our favourite is the Maison Maizen brand which is an organic matcha sourced from a multi-generational family estate and grown in the rich volcanic soils of Kagoshima.

Why Matcha Deserves a Spot in Your Mug

    • Steady, jitter-free energy - Thanks to the amino acid L-theanine, matcha provides an even energy lift without the crash that can follow coffee.
    • Rich in antioxidants - Matcha is loaded with catechins that help combat oxidative stress and inflammation.
    • Supports detoxification - The bright green hue comes from chlorophyll, which supports healthy liver function.
    • Boosts metabolism - Studies suggest matcha can increase fat oxidation, a supportive addition to a balanced diet.
    • Fertility-friendly and pregnancy-smart - Compared with high-dose coffee, matcha is a gentler option for many who are TTC or pregnant. (Always check your total daily caffeine intake.)
    • Calm focus - L-theanine promotes a calm, alert state that suits work, study, or mindful living.
    • Hormone and blood sugar support - Emerging research suggests possible benefits for glycaemic control and adrenal balance.

How to Make A Creamy Matcha Latte

Some matcha lattes can taste grassy or thin. This barista-style version is smooth, creamy, and deeply satisfying.

    Ingredients:
    • 1 tsp ceremonial matcha (Orchard Street Matcha is a great pick)
    • 1 cup nut milk (almond, macadamia, or cashew - avoid seed oils where possible)
    • 1/4 cup hot water (just below boiling to prevent bitterness)
    • 1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional, supportive for blood sugar balance)
    • 1 tsp raw honey or maple syrup (optional)
    • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
    Method:
    • Warm the nut milk in a small saucepan over low heat until hot but not boiling.
    • In a bowl, add the matcha, then pour in the hot water. Whisk vigorously in a zig-zag motion. A bamboo whisk works best, although an electric frother also does the job.
    • Stir in vanilla, cinnamon, and honey if using.
    • Pour in the warm nut milk and whisk or blend until creamy.
    • Sip, smile, and enjoy.

Iced version: Blend all ingredients, then pour over ice for a refreshing matcha pick-me-up.

Not All Nut Milks Are Created Equal

When making matcha at home or ordering at a café, check labels for seed oils, gums, and artificial thickeners. Many “healthy” nut milks include additives you may wish to avoid.

    Cleaner brands to consider:
    • Pure Harvest - Activated Almond Milk
    • Nutty Bruce - Organic Almond, Cashew and Hazelnut Milk
    • Manna Wholefoods (Fremantle) - house-made almond milk if you are in Perth

When ordering out, ask which nut milk brand is used, or opt for a black matcha with a small dash of milk if you want to minimise additives.

    Matcha as a Daily Ritual

Matcha is more than a trend. It is a gentle ritual for energy, focus, and overall wellness. When prepared well, it offers a smooth, creamy, nourishing alternative to coffee with benefits that go beyond a caffeine hit. Next time you reach for coffee, consider switching it up with this antioxidant-packed latte. Your body and brain will thank you.
